3D design 'overlay'

I dunno how to call it... I'll just call it an overlay? lol

Just look at the picture and you'll get what I mean.
The weapon is not part of it, obviously, just to showcase.

Comments are welcome

may be you would call it a prototype? Does such a design of weapon actually exist? Is it a design of your own? Nice modelling, should also show a wireframe image

It looks pretty good, still a bit too flat and clean I think. The stuff you did around the sides is pretty nice, but slightly pixelated, kind of like a .gif image.. To improve it further I would add more textures, blended in with some layers and more a 3d look for the entire thing, have a look at psdtuts.com they have lots of great photoshop tutorials!

How did you manage to render with a transparent background? I've always wanted to know that, I know you can get rid of the background in photoshop etc.. but directly from 3ds max how?

I did it like this (not sure if step1 is necesairy, but I do it anyway, cba to test it lol).

1) Go to Render>Enviroment and select backround material. Check the 'display unsupported blabla' thing. Select 'Transparant', something called like that.
2) Render your image, and save it as a .png

This works for me, I was very happy to see it was working when I tested it Saves A LOT of work

Ah thanks!
Saves a lot of pen tooling, or shoddy magic wanding.

Wiggy, another technique which works well and is used often is using an alpha map, you can add it as a render element and then import it into photoshop and apply it as a mask.
