is there an easy way to do 3D text in Max?
or do I have to outline the letters and extrude?

Create -->Shapes -->Text (or under the Create - Shapes roll out)

Choose your size, enter your text, then apply the extrude modifier.

That's the only way I'm aware of. Someone else can chime in if they know another way.
