Booleans, bleh

I don't know if this is a problem my computer is having, i.e. a bug in the program, or what. But I'm doing the iPod mini tutorial, and I'm trying to boolean out the screen of it. Here's what I have before, and after.

Before:

After applying boolean:

Half of my mesh is now gone. Is that supposed to happen? Also, is there a way to select only 'some' of a polygon. For instance, can I create a selection on the body and just extrude that one selection? I guess I could create some cuts, but how would I chamfer the corners? Thanks for any help!

you can't select a part of a polygon, but you can cut and slice so you create new polygons which you can then adjust again.. especially the cut tool is usefull for this, if you need an edge to be straight try scaling down the 2 vertices on each hand simultaneously (spelling?) on one axis and it will become perfectly straight, hope that helps out.. Sometimes it's better to stay away from booleans, they're shit, except the new ones in max 9, pro booleans do work well..

I can only see one of the pictures you posted, but I'm wondering if you want to use the "forced 2-sided" option. If you right click on the word "perspective" in the viewport, go to "configure", put a checkmark in the "force 2-sided" box, and say "ok". That will make it all visible. You also want to check "force 2 sided" in the render options. For some reason, there are a number of images that only appear as a little box with an X in it, and when I look at the properties and copy that into the address line, it still doesn't work.

If you want to make a box on an empty face, select the face using the polygon tool and use the inset, works great, used it many times.
