Grow a building animation

My first animation! So far i've got about 5 buildings. The main focus of the animation is a building sort of growing, which i've already animated.

Some more renders;
At the moment i'm just adding detail to everything, adding more buildings etc. I'd like to add some dynamic clouds aswell, gotta figure that one out though. The whole animation is done with scaling and moving objects, with one or two modifiers.

Looks interesting, I like it! nice lighting as well. Clouds could be tricky, since it's an animation you don't want render times to be too high right, so try to keep it simple.

Cheers jelmer, I'm not worried too much about render times, i'm averaging at about 2 -3minutes per frame at 1280x720 (draft FG) with motion blur on (time samples 1), which is ok. I tried doing clouds with gizmos and volume fog but it rendered like a solid black box with soft edges, dunno how to fix that!

mr PhysicalSky is causing some problems; see attached pic below. Volume fog effect won't recieve illumination for some reason, it just renders black, whatever I try to do.

That looks pretty good mate well done! i like the way the building grows out from the middle to the sides (if you know what i mean) what other things are you gonna add? Just the clouds?

Dunno yet, was thinking about doing interiors, i'll see how much time i've got left. I wanted to do some morphs from like a solid concrete block to a sofa, but apparently you need two objects with the exact same amount of verts, so maybe it's a bit difficult for a first go.

have you made a storyboard for what you want to animate so that you have your camera angles worked out?

Then you can consider how much detail to model:

Forground, and close ups - lots of details

medium shots and middle ground balanced detail

wide angle and long distance shots, with back ground less detail

I'm not a games developer but when developers for games environments creat models i believe they recreate three of everything, for close, medium and far away scenes and shots, to give the games engine less stress on rendering times.

it's more to do with save time and planning your project in such a way that you could hand it to someone else to complete without any hesitation. which means in the future you can come back to a project and refamiliarise yourself with it and improve it.

better to have a short pencil than a long memory

but great work so far, keep it up
