Initial response is to say make sure the IoR is right for each sphere, they look *kinda* off... But it's entirely possible I'm reading too much into it. Looks good

I agree it looks good the only glass ball that seems to have an appropriate shadow is the clear glass ball the shadows on the others don't seem right, the shadow thats a shadow on the table is right but the reflective or ambient shadow is occluded with the naturally casted shadow. Does that make sense?

I did I think the same tutorial and although it was quite long I manged it, but if you asked me to explain what I did at the time I didn't have a clue. Which on seeing yours makes me feel I shoudl redo that tutorla as well.

Here's what I achieved when I tried it and in fact it was doing this particular tutorial made me go on a course because whilst I followed the instructions that was all I did I didn't learn anything. Not saying it was a bad tutorial it was written really well which is why I could follow it but not understand it. Does that make sense?

i think everybody have some balls rendered home , me too,, heh

but to your pic jart23, i looks good but the hdri map looks to me bad =),, what hdri map have u used? u should try Kitchen hdri map, it get a nice effect from they ,, anyway, have u added the hdri map to the v-ray renderer menu under enviroment/reflection and refraction? and what character have u hdri map in the material slot?

I must've been the only who didn't use a map lol I didn't understant HDRI's at the time and the explanations I found made me feel then that I had to be a rocket scientist to understand them. I do understand them now and its good to see the different examples of HDRI's being used on those balls.

Thats another tutorial I'll have to definately redo and practice then apply it to a project.

Apart from my image, but this question is in relationhsip to all the other images, why are the shadows so different?

I think the difference of light( shadows) are all in how you apply the lighting and the hdri, i did a little tweeking to make it look how i wanted. and i did use the wrong hrdi map....i will have to re work this one and show you all what I really wanted to accomplish. and yeah the shadows are a little off for all the spheres except the glass one....i will have to mess with the lighting and ior a little more to get the right effect.

well my original idea after the tutorial for the spheres was to include a chrome table for the balls to be on and some different shapes, plus a rusty material for one sphere as well as something for the spheres to be in or on maybe. i will upload the image here when i finish it....thanks for the comments everyone.

what i do is to go to the render menu, select environment or press number 8 on the kbd, in maps go and select one of the free hdri maps that come with map or download it.

you could cheat by loading up a normal jpg image in your material browser and changing its type to circular, haven't got maxed loaded to look at exactly what the steps are, but then you drag and drop the circular map onto the environment map slot and then render.

sorry the steps are not detailed but am about to go on date with my pillow and some sleep. lol let me know how you get on hahaha
