Need help... texturing my Tyrannosaurus - Rex

hi folks,

I have been working with max 8 for about 8 months, and I got pretty good with the modling part, but Im having trouble texturing my T-Rex, the problem is the uv seams with max... Iv tried bodypaint, but having trouble understanding it, I wish they had a step by step texture tutorial on dinosaurs. can someone help me with this issue....here is a render of my rex.

thanks,
Ron

welcome, you've come to the right place, I started modeling about 6 months ago and the people from this site have been wonderful in their help with my work and I have improved immensely.

I can see what you're trying to do and I would suggest, doing the tutorial on pelt mapping. Basically its like tailoring a costume for your character and developing skills in photoshop to create textures for your character to give it the look you want.

The nice thing about the pelt mapping tutorial is that it will teach you also about the UVWunrap modifier, once you get to know it, you can't live without it. You'll also learn about all the other methods and techniques for unwrapping as well.

Don't forget, it's easy to follow instructions, its what you do with what you have learned afterwards. You'll need to practice and practice, tutorials are not a 'mix and bake' solution.

They're only a step in the process of your learning and development. But saying that, what a really nice organic model, any mesh or clay model images?

yeah, pelt mapping should work pretty well, there will always be a seam or two but you can actually choose where you want the seam to be, pelt mapping will get rid of most stretching, just take a look at the tutorial and you'll see how it works.

Hey guy ya... i would use the turtorials that came with 3d max...there very simple and are step by step!! which isreally easy...

but i was wondering what program u where orginaly going to use to paint ur modle... i know Zbrush is good at it... so i was wondering if Zbrush would be agood thing to use... is it worth exporting the modle to Zbrush and going through all the hassle of saving the modle and everything if it's even possible and then would it be better to get Zbrush 3? and is there a diff from Zbrush to Zbrush 3 and stuff... for painting a modle and everything... and then also can u keep the textures that u make in Zbrush in 3d max... like the glossines of it? hmmm ya...?

Awesome modle by the Way!!! how may polys does it have or did u use Nurbs? becasue it looks awesome.... maybe some nostriles on the face would be cool... or where u just gunna draw em in... thats awesome how good u are for only working with the program for 8 months...!

thanks,

I have been a videogapher for along time, and I use adobe premiere an alot of editing software, but , this 3d is a hole different ball game..I think by doing video editing, it helped me with 3d max and the skills of modling in a short period of time, but, I like more of the visual effects, I plan on going to school to get certified for max...and thanks for the complement of my T-REX, by the way it doe have nostriles, lol...I still have to work on them...and I used polys and alot of cuts for the detailing....

thanks again.....

I know how you feel its more or less how I came about to going to school to learn max. You should also consider looking into adobe after effects also. The world of CG, its canvass just lets you paint whats ever in your mind and you'll find yourself exploring avenues that you thought were always beyond you, well beyond me. hahahahaha

Don't fall for the '1 click fix solution' and by that I mean a automatic lead pencil doesn't make you better if you don't use a normal lead pencil. Michael Angelo made some incredible sculptures with a mallet and chisel, no 3D scanning system, no computerised tools or extraneous calculations, just basic understanding of anatomy and art, as well as a lot of practice.

lol must've been murder when he was almost finished and just chiseled that last piece when a finger broke off lol, no undo buttonthere hehehehe
