This book is quite good, it goes quite in depth and is for people who have some background knowledge of 3D Studio Max. Although it sticks to modelling just one character, it doesn't give a general overview of how to achieve results in modelling different types of characters. But overall its good if its your first book on modelling characters for animation.

At just under a £5 its worth the investment, even though I am trying to learn Maya and Maya is meant to be easier for character modelling. I find max less daunting and more intuitive to find out where everything is.

there are some other good books on modelling characters
