| Re: Studio Render with MentalRay Mine didn't come out right at all. I did what appeared to be everything you said in the tutorial but when I rendered everything was pitch black except for the reflective parts on my object. I tried to mess with things to get it to come out right but I didn't even know what was going on in the seen so I could tweak it very good. so what is the purpose of the boxes that are right behind the lights and why are the lights set to inverse square, what does inverse square do? lastly how do I get my seen to be lit up like yours? |

| Re: Studio Render with MentalRay Ok, which version of MAX are you using? Because I used Max 9 for the tutorial, and if you are using a different version the settings/button configuration may be a little different. The purpose of the boxes is to give the reflection on the object. For example, in my scene, what looks like an HDRI map on the car itself is actually the reflection of the light bouncing off of the boxes. Inverse square is a type of attenuation. All lights use attenuation. Attenuation is the effect of lighting diminishing over distance. With standard lights you can set explicitly where the attenuation begins and where it ends. With Inverse Square, it is mostly used to give the effect of being outside or in a professional photography studio. Inverse square applies inverse-square decay. This is actually the "real world" decay of light. Something you might want to check is your Unit Setup. That can be found under the Customize drop down menu from the main tool bar. Click on Customize then go to Units Setup. When the dialog box comes up, make sure you have Generic Units selected and the Lighting Units is set to International. Try this and if it works and if it does, great, but if not just reply back and we will figure it out. |
