You don't put them into Max using .max. You open up material editor (Press M) and click on the little box next to Diffuse. Click on 'Bitmap' and navigate to the reference image. Then apply the material to the plane, and viola.

Hey Jelmer, I ran into a problem chamfering my edges. Take a look:

How can I fix this? lol, I don't periodically save...my last save is just before you chamfer those edges. I'd like to know what I'm doing wrong before I spend all that time selected all those edges and finding out that chamfer does the same thing. Any ideas?

yaric-Go into Customize>preferences, then click Viewports and at the bottom click configure drive. at the bottom of that window look for "Match bitmap size as closely as possible" and check it, hit ok, then ok again. then see if that helps.

jojo12111-you can't put pictures as anything but picture files. .mat and drf arn't picture files. things like .bmp, .jpg, .gif, and a couple other ones that you can use. to get it into .mat, click the little symbol under the material pictures that looks like a circle and a floppy disk, then name it and it should save in your material folder as a .mat.

WoLF-is it just that circle of edges that messes up? if so, make sure all of them are welded together, if they arn't that can really mess up a lot of things.

ouch, that looks ugly, there isn't really a good way to fix it i think, you'll just have to correct the geometry manually by moving scaling rotating stuff (verts, edges, etc)... I know, it's annoying but there aren't really any clean ways to do it. If you have max 9 though you can use shaders to chamfer or use power booleans!

My blueprints are blurry:
you need to change some driver settings, go to preferences> viewport, and increase the size of the bitmaps, to 1024 x 1024, and check 'match bitmap size as close as possible'

Compliments of this sites (new) FAQ.

Well, (old) FAQ, but yeah, if you cant find bitmap size check box, click driver settings and it should be in there.
