Kitchen_still life

Hi, this is my first effort on Mental Ray. The modeling was done in 3Ds Max 8, and it was rendered in MR. Then it was edited in Photoshop. Please post your comments on it. http://www.enjoycg.com/forums/images/editor/menupop.gif

I like it, it's a cool scene. The only crit I have, is I think the cup materials have a little too much glossiness and specularity. Just look a little weird reflecting everything that much.

Pretty nice, all the models are fine but lighting could use some work to improve the realism. First of all, the shadows are too sharp i think, even a tiny bit of smoothing will make it much better, take a look around (your own kitchen? ) and you'll see the shadows are never perfectly sharp, the same goes for any object, that's why chamfering is so useful. With mr area lights you can add the softness easily by adjusting the area light size, you should really try that.
Another thing is that some objects have too little shadow, they seem to be floating now, even though they're probably on the surface of another object, i think increasing the FG and GI quality will help.
Modeling wise you might want to adjust the scale of some objects, some seem to be off which causes them to look unrealistic.

Thanks to both of you. Nope it's not my kitchen , I took help of a reference photograph. I am uploading the original photo here. I thought the shadows in the photo is sharp enough, that's why I deliberately made them so sharp. I am still working on the reflections and the materials to match them with the reference image as much as I can.

Hi Friends,

Thanks for your warm appreciation. Hey, look I have made some more changes to the image. I am uploading the new image without replacing the previous one so that you can easily compare it with the previous one. Would like to hear more from you. Though I have halved the reflectivity of the cups, still I have a doubt if they need to be reduced further Suggestions??

hmm the cups do need to be a bit reflective, but it's mainly bright white highlights in the photo there, so you might want to adjust your material for that, or adjust the environment. Have you tried adjusting the lighting at all, what settings are you using right now?

Yup, I did try lot to change the lighting options in order to improve the look of the cups, but it is disturbing the entire scene, and after a prolonged effort I found this lighting setting to serve my purpose. But at the same time the cups are too reflective, they need to be fixed. And the problem is probably due to the material. I would try to reduce the amount of reflection a little bit. I guess this would solve the problem. Oh, by the way, I forgot to mention something vital. Those bright white highlights have been created in a tricky way. I used an HDRI map on the opposite walls of the kitchen. I used that map in the diffuse and self illumination mapping slot. And this map is being reflected on the steel and glass of the juicer, giving it a realistic look, otherwise they were looking too flat and non-glossy. At the same time, for the cups they were too much reflective. So the solution was to decrease the reflection amount of the cups. And if they need further modification, I think they need to be done in the same way.
