I would suggest you start with the 3ds max tutorial helpfiles, as they have been put together by the best in the industry and will teach you how to use the featuers properly for developing all your modelling skills requirements.

Do some of the easier vidoe modelling tutorials you can download from this site to get you going.

if you want to do the low poly character tutorial in max it states -

Quote:
this tutorial demonstrates how to model a character similar to those found in today’s video games. You will explore a variety of modeling techniques, starting with what is commonly called “box modeling.” This means constructing your model from a simple polygon box. You can model just about anything using this method.

You will also make extensive use of the editable poly object and Edit Poly modifier. You will also use the Symmetry modifier to help reduce modeling time and effort.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Time to complete: 6–8 hours

If you want video tutorials, then 3dbuzz.com has an alien tutorial and 3d-palace.com has a space marine (and maybe some more) and also paid tutorial for a low-poly game Troll character.
Great written tutorial is Joan of Arc (just google it).

Yes a low poly character looks worse than a high poly character, as more polygons you ad as smoother your model becomes or can become.
e.g. take your sword from TE_´s tutorial and apply turbosmooth to it when setting the render iterations to 1 or 2 you should see that your model becomes smoother.

Well, it's a game character, so it's a low polygonal modelling. That should not discourage you though as every game you ever played had low poly models in it.

A low polygon model doesn't necessarily look worse compared to a high polygon one, to be honest, I've seen many low polygon game characters which looked way better than high polygon ones, it depends on how you sue those polygons! Of course, if you're going for 100% realism, low poly won't be realistic eventually.
