Smile Which renderer 'They all look nice but...."

This thread caem from a question oasked of DreamsIn3Dimpressive, I'm never sure how to ask this being of limited exprience and unable to find an article reviewing all the latest renderers and their features. I'm on a 3d modelling and animation course.

Event he tutors cannot agree as to the most appeopriate renderer, suppose it's a question of money, taste and personal preferences based on knowledge and experience as to which render you choose?

So why did you choose VRay over the built in Max renders?

What I would like to aske the community is based on their personal experience, did your choice of renderer change as your wealth of experice and knowledge grow and did the modelling tasks chosen influence the rederer chosen for the task or was it just arbitary?

I understand renderers are chosen for the 'light management', eg Maxwell Renderer? But some are chosen for their ability to provide material libraries eg Mental Ray and Maxwell Renderer?

With so many not too dissimiliar functionality and material capabilities I feel like someone trying to buy a sports car from a car showroom and I'm saying to myself 'They all look nice but.....'

geldslaw@yahoo.co.uk:

This is a question that cannot be answered. Asking a Subaru fan which car to buy is pointless. The only way that you could buy this "car" is to take them all out for test drives and see which you like. Of course there will be features in some of them that the others do not have, and vice versa.

I myself use MentalRay, for the fact that it is built-in and requires no extra cash to get (also it is a damn good renderer...). I also like the whole set of features that come packed up with a nice red ribbon

I used scanline for a long time before switching to other renderers. Scanline is good, serves all purposes. Good renderer, if you know how to use it.

Anyway, hoped this helped, although I am very sure it didn't.

Use mental ray if you own Max already. Its the best renderer that comes standard with the application.

I use vray cuz mental ray is a bit too slow for me. Not because its better, but because I believe it be a faster renderer and I know the interface of it.

If you don't have the money to buy another renderer, then stick with mental ray because you can render some amazing work with it.

Your problem is that you dont know enough about it yet to get a decent render so you're asking questions about other ones when what you should be doing is learning the one you have.

I gave you a Mental Ray tutorials link. Use it.. otherwise its pointless to ask about other renderers when you cant even use the one you got.

(p.s. I dont want to sound harsh but I started 3D only 10months ago and got a job from just my personal portfolio, no schooling. I asked in a forum once what app should I use and all that started was a big debate.. so I based my application use on what field I wanted to get into and looked at what renderer was most commonly used and thats what I went with... too many questions gets nothing done and relying on other people giving your their opinions, gives you nothing but more thinking to do.

Think for yourself. Make a decision and once you do, stick with it and do the best you can with it. Find out what field of 3d you want to get into then find out what application and renderer thats 80% used then you'll know what you should do. Until then, youre wasting time asking questions. Post some renders and stop asking so many questions. Get to work
