for my video card driver settings in 3ds max which is better opnegl or hardware?

well with hardware i couldn't render more than 900, 000 polys but with software I could

that's pretty strange, i don't think that setting would affect the maximum amount of polygons you can render, viewport speed maybe, but not rendering.

Depends on what you are aiming to do.

Either OpenGL or Direct3D.

P.S If you use lots of particles, then use Heidi. You have to download it, but it works great.

hm i use hardware, but my computer crashes every time there are more than 500 000 polys in the scene, but i think it's because of my pc spec, it is really powerful but only has a 220W power supply

you do realise that it is very dangerous for your pc components... most of them might just "die" eventually...
better buy yerself a new power supply
