Grass

I was wondering what was the best way to make realistic grass? mainly for close ups, well more for photo realistic arch viz. But i want to be able to see the individual grass strands. Most of the maps ive used dont seem to tile properly and it ends up looking like a checkered soccer field

Ive tried using the Displace modifier with the Matte Finish Arch & Design template, but doesnt seen to come out right? Im also using Mental Ray as my renderer.

Thanks

id model 2 - 3 blades of grass

add a pf source in the scene

press 6

add a "position object" to the pf source stack

put the eplacement on your ground plane

rotate the grass so it stands up from the plane

set the speed to 0

this method will randomly place the blades of grass within the scene from your ground plane, hope that helps............

a similar tutorial to this method can be found here...audience-wave-in-stadium-part-1.html

its not grass but the same principle i guess, plus it shows u how t animate it too!

haha no problem peeps, the beauty of this method is that you can turn up / down the number of blades of grass rendered for course / thin grass. Secondly the more blades you initially model the more variety of grass you will have......plus its animatable so the possibilities are endless ^_^

A good way to model grass would be a thin cone and a bend modifyer with a green material with a slight shine to it

The hair and fur modifyer would also work well tbh I never thought of that method as I have only just been able to afford max 9 i havent played with it too much but it also does seems like a good fast option.

I don't at all doubt that greeney's method for this is a winner, but, greeney.....can you write it again in plain English?

It may seem easy for you, and those that have a reasonable understanding of Max, but in an effort to help those that are still learning, me included, a well structured plain English version would be beneficial to ALL our members.

If you could possibly do that I'm sure I won't be the only one to click the 'thanks' button!

Regards.

No need to go that far, but if you do.....even better!

Thank-you, appreciated.
