There aren't a lot of good tutorials out there - believe me, I've looked!

There are some fair tutorials on YouTube.

The difficult part is the hull and there are 3 different approaches:

Box modeling - probably the easiest but, with a complex hull, it can be difficult and time consuming. You need a very large number of vertices to get accuracy and smoothness.

Spline modeling - For a hull with moderate complexity, spline modeling (with a Surface Modifier applied) works fairly well. You can get a reasonable "faired" hull this way, but for a more complex hull, it can be a challenge.

NURBS Modeling - Many modelers I've seen use Rhino and its powerful NURBS tool set. You can create some extremely complex surfaces with NURBS, but the learning curve is pretty high.

To build my hull, I used DelftShip, which is a NURBS based modeling program but, since that's all it does, the interface makes it easier to use, but if you're taking a 3DS Max specific course, you probably won't be able to get away with that!

NURBS is the direction I'll be taking in future models, but my skill level isn't quite there yet. Maybe I'll make a tutorial once I get that figured out, but don't wait on me!

I like the first one - I've never used the Bevel Profile Modifier before and I can see a lot of uses for it.

I've seen the second one before, but I've never had much luck with the Loft Modifier. Perhaps I should try again.

Actually, the best way to model a ships hull is a technique I was shown that is used for modeling a car and that is to

- extrude along edge

the famous fiat 500 tutorial shows you how to extrude along edge if you want a quick heads up

or at another guess, use a plane then use a Free Form Modifier to get the shape you need
