Autodesk 3December

Autodesk last night was celebrating world wide 3December, it invited a host of CG houses to come and show the multimedia solutions that they had created using their products.

Wow, last night was the best, free drinks, lots of prizes, and a wicked insight into the workflow of some of the best and brightest CG Houses in the world. They showed solutions created for film, music video, web content and scence applications. All used CG in one aspect or another.

But it was the workflow, the tips and tricks that were shared, why many had to write scripts to create solutions, and how many of these solutions are availabel on autodesks' area.

But one solution I want to bring to your attention is the solution provided by Taylor James for Motorola City, you can see the potential of providing a multimedia solution and developing assets

the city is a sign of times to come, 3D CG artist are expected to create assets that can be viewed in real time, although that environment was fixed but if you sit back without going into the city you can see the trees and cars are animated. What impresses me is thats the solution they came up with to convince motorola that their solution was the best for the price. When you go to work for a multimedia company you may have to be a part of the pitching team that comes up with such creative designs and alternatives.

But before anyone lets you near a polygon they'll want to see some concept sketches before they spend a dime that's why I had to get over my fear of drawing and skethcing so that I wouldn't shut the door in my own face. But I agree with you it does have that game fee to it doesn't it?

one of the things the developers 'lion head studios'went through was how they created one basic design or mesh for their characters and moprhed the mesh, only making some major changes to the head, they also would re- use a lot of the character animations, only varying the facial expressions to give a different interpretation of the gestures.

basically they found a ways to recycle much of basic structure of the game assets, it was a very impressive explanation of how simplicity always works the best

The moving picture company who also spoke at the 3December explaned their creation of the Sony Extreme detail commercial for Sony's new HD Camera. they explained most of the filming and compositing process as well as how they overcame some of the challenges.

I cannot stress how it is important that if you ever get the chance to go to one of these events then you should go as you will see how CG is used as a part of the development process and how you as a CGA, CG Artist have to push your skills not only to know how to do something but how to do it in a different way to how anyone has done it before.

I went to this event too- it was my first- and I thought it was just brilliant! The Realistic Heart by Glassworks Studios was best in show for me and that Motorola site is awesome too!
