Ironically i dont know if you do actually have more control or if its just there to make the user feel a bit smug at using it, i found it easy to create some decent materials in max but thats just me.

yeah i have to say having switched from vray to mental ray, i have gotten a better feel of realisim from doing say skin.. im currently modeling a bike rim.. for a project that has been in and out of attempts for over a year.. but i alway get sofar then give up with my modeling lets me down. but even a simple geometery wheel looks good with mental ray.

I gotta agree fully with Shipwright here, and Max has some great built in tutorials to get you into the modeling techniques needed for producing meshes, at least max 8 did, i'm not too sure if 2010 has the same tutorials as it has a few new tools for modeling.
