depending on the type of seam, first cut the shape of it into your model, then chamfer and finally extrude. Play with that and the results should turn out ok.

heh,,, they are profesionals ,, and they are using V-ray for this kind of render i think. The seam in the leather they make with Z-brush,, "i readed it somewhere "

edit: with the profesionls i meaned: they have knowledge, experience and big comps to render this ,,, =)

well, the models used in that image are fairly simple. unexperienced 3ds max users often underestimate the value of lighting and textures, most of the time time those are more important than the models themself i think. You don't need v-ray for this, mental ray will do fine (especially in max 9, in combination with the new A&D materials!) I suggest you just get started with it and with our help you'll be able to achieve it for sure! Just make sure you plan ahead, make a sketch or two, maybe one from the top view to arrange your room, also determine the size of your room in cm's with mental ray to get the right scale and realistic lighting with mental ray.

Textures are images, and a shader is the actual result of all the texture and stuff on a material

create a raytrace material, go to maps and pick 'environment' simply put the hdri map in there, now every time you apply this material to a model that environment will be used for the reflections.
