Multiple PC

Hey guys

I was wondering does anyone know anything about using more than one pc for rendering? like a render farm type thing. My old computer is just sitting there, and it doesnt run that fast anymore, but its got a bit of power in it and I think it would help with rendering if I could somehow harness its processing power.

Have no idea of how to do this type of thing, can anyone direct me to maybe a guide or some advice on how I can go about this? Or if its even possible, its quite an old PC, its about 4 years old, single core 3.6ghz, 2gb ram....

thanks

Sure..........

I've been using Net Rendering and Distributed Rendering for some time now and it's excellent. You can follow Autodesks advice in "greeney's" post if you want, but if you want the 'I just wanna use my other PC to help with rendering' then I can guide ya through it.

To start with, get the two PC's connected via a network, and make sure they are talking to each other.

Then install Max on the second machine.

When you've got that far give me a shout and we'll go through it. "greeney" is right, it IS simple, but get a 'backslash' in the wrong place and.......well.......instant hair loss.

Anyway.....whenever you're ready mate.

Regards.

You don't need a screen, you might need a screen for the initial setup but after that you can setup your computer in such a way that the render application will start up automatically so you don't need to do anything expect turning on the render computer.

If you do need access to both of them you can switch the monitor between them, but of course this is a bit annoying, instead you can use a so called KVM switch to change between computers quickly.
