Double Trouble

I've got this problem with my Dual monitor set up.
Prior to last night it worked fine, but I put a render on, fairly intense one I guess and this morning one monitor - the primary one was unavailable.
Iam unable to reset the dual monitor configuration for some reason, and both monitors identify as number 1 even though on the set up screen they read as 1 and 2.
I am able to make the necessary set up but as soon as I hit the apply button my secondary monitor jumps back to the right of the primary- ok now I'm sure youre confused, but if anyone has an idea, great

Any help would be most appreciated Thank you.

Another note: they are different types of monitors one digital other analog.

Hmmmm odd one.

Have you checked the ATI settings from the advanced button? I don't know how much you've gone into this but you can alter the display settings from within these, but be careful, the advanced options relate to the monitor you have selected.

Select one and check the advanced settings for it, then select the other. It may also make a difference if the monitor is not active too so make sure they are both active first, even if they don't work.

Depending on the monitor, you may find you get more options with the primary than the secondary, in fact identical monitors will differ just because of the way graphics drivers work, but you may find something in there that doesn't seem right.

As far as I know, Max does not have anything relating to monitors within it so it can be narrowed down to a simple setting or a driver issue.

I've had problems with dual screens before but not like this. Sorry can't be of more help. I appreciate it can be a headache though.

Regards.

I dont know how it changes back by itself either, but it does, as Mr.Tom says it is likely a setting somewhere. Im just fishing in the dark right now.Thanks...

Thanks for replying, I cleared all the drivers and reinstalled them, most of the time I solve these things sort of by accident, but this one has me confused.
I assign monitor 2 as attached .
When I click on monitor 2 it shows up as secondary as it should and monitor one shows as primary, good , good but they both show identity as 1 and that should only be for the primary.
I thinks its a digital /analog thing, and there are settings on the primary regarding this that I will fiddle with more. Anyway when I find out what it is, no matter how embarrassing, I will be sure to post the answer.

Thanks again

OK the problem was I needed to update the drivers, this is what Im told, I'm not completely inept and I'm positively sure that I did that. Then ignoring the little voice in my head saying "don't do that" I went into the bios and started experimenting and then things went from bad to worse. Oh well.
Im happy just to get my computer back.
