Realistic lamp

I'm relatively new to Max, and was wondering how to go about creating a realistic light emitting from a source, such as a lamp, bulb, etc...

I know some about lighting, but when I try to bring light to my sources, they look odd.

Could you be a bit more specific, what is it that you want to achieve exactly, some renders would be useful too. You can always have a look at the lighting tutorials, they should help you out a bit, but for specific advice we need some more info on what you want to do..
